About the Project
This project is funded by a grant from the Social Sciences Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to provide parents with background knowledge and support to engage with their pre-adolescent children who are immersed in multimodal environments as they develop their critical media literacy (CML) skills. Pre-adolescents need strategies to think critically about the media texts that they are consuming and parents need to have the tools to facilitate this learning from home.
Part of the grant requirements are to engage with an industry partner, and Nelson Publishing is providing DELL Chromebooks and access to credible, digital resources that are linked to the Ontario curriculum.
The project team from Brock University, Faculty of Education, are all certified Ontario Teachers who are also teacher educators. They are providing a series of workshop modules for parents based on the topics that the parents have identified as priorities for their own learning. Each of the workshops is summarized in a tab. The project team will include parents’ input and voices throughout the project and invite families to contribute to the discussion through focus groups, feedback interviews, and sharing examples of learning from home with media texts.
