Workshop #2 - Adolescent Online Activity & Parent Interactions

Topic: Workshop #2 will feature aspects of flow and building positive online identities through parent interventions. The workshop will be more interactive than the previous one and participation through sharing is encouraged.

App Ages & Purposes

During one of the workshops, a parent asked if I could find out what ages children can sign up for different apps. I've found a great article that explains the purpose of the app, the age for signing up, and the security features of the app. Please find the link here

Building Identity & Participation

As mentioned in the workshop, building self-identity is an important process children work through. They try new activities, change their clothing or style, listen to new music, and hang out with new friends. All of these changes are now done both online and offline, but the ease of "trying" new identities or finding new interests is now easier with the affordance of information online. This is a natural process for children to work through to develop a better understanding of who they are and what they value, however, the landscape has now broadened to include an online environment. As parents, we can better understand our children as they learn about who they are through participation in both their online and offline worlds. Through play, discussion, and collaboration, we can build expectations for household technology use, shared time, and acceptable activities.
